Recipe & a Plea

First off, because Trek asked, here is a copy of the molasses cookie recipe. Be forewarned, this makes a lot of cookies.

Molasses Cookies

1 1/4 Cup Vegetable Oil

2 Cups Sugar

1 Cup Molasses

2 Eggs

4 Tsps. Baking Soda

4 1/2 to 5 Cups Flour

1 Tsp. Ground Cloves

1 Tsp. Ground Allspice

2 Tsps. Ginger

2 Tsps. Cinnamon

1 Tsp. Salt

Mix oil, sugar, molasses, soda and spices together. Add eggs one at time then gradually stir in flour. Roll dough into 1″ balls. Roll balls in a plate of sugar (might be fun for some of you male bakers). Bake 10 minutes at 350 to 360 degrees.

Karen, you could always leave out the ginger and maybe add nutmeg instead.  Chris, I don’t know if gluten-free flour substitute would work with this recipe or not.

Now for the part where I plead for advice.  This next Saturday my DH and I have been obligated to attend a formal dinner for his work.  I do possess one dress that could possibly work for the occasion.  The problem is that it doesn’t quite fit and I can’t sew my way out of a wet paper bag.  I had DD#1 take some pictures this morning.  Basically it’s too tall through the shoulders and too big around through the waist and ribcage area.

Because the dress is fully lined I’m unsure how to go about taking in the shoulder straps.  I figure if I could successfully do that and wear a wide belt that this might work.   It was purchased several years ago on-line so exchanging it isn’t an option.

Taking it to a seamstress would be great, but only if it can be finished in time and if it would be less expensive than buying another dress.  I hate clothes shopping with the fire of a thousand suns.  So any tips or experience y’all might have when it comes to altering clothes, etc. are very welcome.

I wonder if there’s time to knit a shawl to disguise my chicken arms… hmm. I’ll check into that.  It’s raining and windy this morning.  Thank heavens it isn’t freezing.  Outside decorating is on hold because we have a concrete tile roof that is slicker than snot on a wooden bridge when wet.  I’d rather remain intact and look like Scrooge for a few more days than kill myself trying to keep up with our festive neighbors.

  • For short notice, I would fold the shoulder straps to the desired length and sew across. Then take the new seam allowance and tack it down. As for the excess room in the waist, I would probably just wear a wide belt and tell everyone that you lost weight. Have fun!
Thanks for the recipe. I think I’ll try it today once I get the kitchen cleaned up.

  • Usually you can substitute Bob’s Red Mill GF Flour in cookies, cake, quick bread, and the like.

I think Karen has great advice! And maybe you would have time to do some sort of big needle drop stitch lacey wrap??

  • What about pinning it in the back with an antique silver looking brooch to take care of the waist and do something similar to the sholder straps. You know add a little BLING BLING. Also a shawl with help conceal some of the strap issue.

  • Lace shawl is a great idea. I’d loan you the one I have but it is romney and mohair (and heavy) and would leave fur all over the dress. Probably some cat hair along with it.

  • Thanks for the pattern. I’d try a seamstress. I know that I can’t bear the thought of messing up a garment with a liner – and I just know that I’d totally ruin it.

Great, did you see what I typed? Pattern. As in the pattern for the cookies. Thanks for the recipe….knitting on the brain…
