While We’re Away

Just a quickie while we’re away at Grandma’s house.  It’s been blowing, calm, raining,  sunny, cold, hailing (but no snow) and just about everything else possible in the weather spectrum since we arrived at the coast.  Monday the girls and I played tourist and visited a local museum.  This building used to house the Coast Guard station at Westport.

Inside each of the rooms is dedicated to a different local vocations, etc. There is a cranberry growers’ room, a logging room, a variety of fishing rooms, including whaling, crabbing, etc. There are also displays showcasing early settlers from the area and lots of paraphernalia, etc. from the Coast Guard.

There was a room for the kids to play in.  They all took turns steering a boat.

Another building houses the Fresnel Lens prism taken out of the Destruction Island lighthouse.  This lens is absolutely stunning.  It’s HUGE too.

The second picture shows the stairs that the lighthouse keeper used everyday to climb into the lens. It needed to be filled twice a day with kerosene and each and every individual lens needed to be cleaned at least once a day to remove the soot.  Before there were motors to turn the large lanterns there were hand-operated mechanisms to turn them. Tthe lighthouse keeper needed to wake up every two hours to pull the chains that wound up the top and made it turn.

A walk around the outside displays,

a visit to the local candy store for salt water taffy,

and a walk around the docks filled the rest of the afternoon.

In the evening we visited with my Grandpa (a.k.a. Great Grandpa Porgy) and enjoyed a relaxing evening. I finished a baby sweater too.

The area is rich with WTF fodder, so I should be able to post again tomorrow. Cheers!

  1. Okay, what the heck are the bones in the window? Enquiring minds want to know.

Love how the little sweater turned out, very cute.

    • *Ack* That would be Inquiring minds want to know. Jeez, I think I need spelling classes again.

    • Those bones were from some variety of whale. There were several different sea mammals and pieces from another whale in a bigger case too.

Thank you on the sweater. It still needs to be blocked.

  2. Congrats on the finished project! I finally turned the heel on the second green ankle sock tonight…or almost finished turning the heel. Looks like you’re having fun in the sun! (and rain, and hail and…)

    The sweater is sweet!

You know how to enjoy a spring break to the max. Yep, that area is FULL of WTF stuff. Give your mom a spontaneous hug for me.

Oh Wow! and I thought that was Grandma’s house!
Glad you had a good time. I love museums and… I have a large ship’s lamp with a Fresnel lens so I know how they work….
    Cheers Gillian
